Portsmouth MPs launch ‘100 Pompey Belles’ campaign to celebrate inspiring local women

As part of Portsmouth’s centenary celebrations, Portsmouth MPs Amanda Martin and Stephen Morgan have today launched the 100 Pompey Belles campaign in partnership with local employer Airbus, celebrating 100 remarkable women who go above and beyond for their communities.

The campaign is inviting residents from across Portsmouth to nominate women who make a real difference to everyday life in the city. From neighbours who look out for those around them, to teachers who inspire their pupils, volunteers supporting local charities, carers, sports coaches and community champions, the campaign aims to recognise the often-unsung heroes whose kindness, dedication and compassion help make Portsmouth such a special place.

The campaign takes its name from the Pompey Belle necklace worn by Amanda Martin, which has become a symbol of sisterhood, solidarity and Portsmouth pride. Originally worn by a group of Portsmouth women supporting one another through their work in education, the necklace represents the strength, resilience and community spirit found across the city.

The 100 Pompey Belles campaign is proudly sponsored by Airbus, whose support will help recognise and celebrate the inspiring women who make an outstanding contribution to communities across Portsmouth during the city’s centenary year.

As Portsmouth marks its 100th anniversary as a city, Amanda and Stephen want to ensure that the women who quietly give so much to others receive the recognition they deserve.

Nominations are now open, with 100 women from across the city set to be honoured.

Amanda Martin, MP for Portsmouth North, said: “My Pompey Belle necklace has always meant so much to me and has caused some rather interesting comments locally… It reminds me of the incredible women who lift each other up, support their communities and make Portsmouth the wonderful city it is. Every day I meet women who quietly go above and beyond without expecting anything in return, and I know there are hundreds more whose stories deserve to be told.

“As we celebrate Portsmouth’s centenary, it feels only right that we celebrate the women who are helping to shape our city’s future. Whether they’re supporting a neighbour, running a community group, caring for others, coaching the next generation or simply always putting others first, I want to hear about them. The 100 Pompey Belles campaign is our way of saying thank you and recognising the extraordinary contribution these women make to our city every single day.”

Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said: “Across Portsmouth, there are countless individuals whose kindness, resilience and dedication often go unrecognised, yet make a lasting difference to local people’s lives. I know that we will all have our own personal stories that reflect this.

“This campaign is about shining a spotlight on the remarkable women who quietly enrich our community every day and giving these unsung heroes the recognition they truly deserve.

“As part of this campaign, we are calling on Portsmouth people to help us celebrate these individuals by nominating women who embody the very best of Pompey. We cannot wait to hear their inspiring stories.”

Kata Escott, Managing Director at Airbus Defence and Space UK, said: “A city’s greatest asset is its people. At Airbus, we know that a thriving, innovative economy is built on the foundation of strong, connected communities. By supporting the 100 Pompey Belles, we are proud to recognise the women who contribute so much to Portsmouth.”
