The recent announcement of the energy price cap increase to 10% is another reminder of the ongoing challenges we face, largely stemming from 14 years of Conservative governance that has left us with a legacy of high energy bills and insecurity.
Amanda said: “The government acknowledges the burden this will place on some households. The situation we find ourselves in is not just a result of market fluctuations but a failure to invest in clean energy solutions that could have shielded us from such volatility.
This is exactly why the new Labour Government is committed to transforming Britain into a clean energy superpower, ensuring that we invest in sustainable energy sources and create jobs in the process. Our plan aims to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels towards homegrown clean energy, which is essential for reducing energy bills in the long term.
In the short term, we are targeting support to the most vulnerable in our communities. This winter, over three million households will benefit from the Warm Home Discount, providing £150 off energy bills for those on lower incomes. Additionally, pensioners who qualify will receive a Winter Fuel Payment of £200, or £300 for households with someone aged over 80, helping to alleviate some of the financial strain”.
For constituents seeking assistance with rising energy costs, several resources may be available to support you:
1. Warm Home Discount: If you are on a low income or receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for this discount. Contact your energy supplier or visit the government’s website for more information.
2. Winter Fuel Payment: Eligible pensioners should apply through the Department for Work and Pensions to receive their Winter Fuel Payment. This is aimed at helping with heating costs during the cold winter months.
3. Energy Advice Line: The government has set up a dedicated helpline for energy advice, where you can speak to trained advisors about your situation and find out what support is available to you.
4. The City Council: Switched On Portsmouth offers help and advice about free energy and money saving schemes that can help you make your home warmer, cut energy costs and reduce carbon. Visit the Switched On website or call the team for free on 0800 260 5907.
As the government works towards a clean energy future, it’s important to remember that change takes time. Amanda will continue to lobby the government on behalf of constituents to tackle the energy crisis.
