Amanda Martin, local MP for Portsmouth North, has organised a 4.5km walk on Sunday 18th January, bringing together residents, sports clubs, charities, and community groups to shine a light on men’s health and wellbeing ahead of the most depressing day of the year.

The 4.5km distance was picked to represent the 4.5-year life expectancy gap between men and women in the UK resulting from a range of causes including higher rates of some preventable illness, later engagement with services, and the tragic impact of suicide. The event encourages people across the constituency to come together, get active, and raise awareness of issues affecting men and boys.

Amanda Martin MP said: “It’s fantastic to see so many brilliant local organisations work every day to support health and connection in our community. For many men and boys, opening up or seeking support isn’t easy, and these groups play a crucial role. I’m proud to join constituents in this 4.5km to celebrate that work and to encourage more people to get involved.”

On International Men’s Day the Government launched the UK’s first Men’s Health Strategy, aiming to tackle some of the challenges facing boys and men and sitting alongside ongoing commitments to improve outcomes for women and girls. It included steps to tackle prostate cancer and £3.6 million in funding for suicide prevention services, including a partnership with Premier League’s Together Against Suicide initiative with the Samaritans, which helps tackle the stigma around men’s mental health and embed health messaging into the matchday experience.

Ms Martin added: “Raising awareness of men’s health doesn’t take anything away from the vital work to support women and girls, it strengthens our whole community. I’m proud that this Labour government has launched the country’s first ever men’s health strategy and am confident the package of funding, specialist training and support will make a real and positive impact in the lives of boys and men across our community.”

Local groups taking part include Pompey in the Community and Moneyfields FC
