Amanda Martin MP has marked International Women’s Day by celebrating the progress made towards women’s equality and highlighting the action the Labour Government is taking to empower women across the country.
Labour has a proud history of advancing women’s rights in Britain, delivering landmark legislation such as the Equal Pay Act 1970 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, as well as maternity rights and the right to request flexible working.
Amanda Martin MP said the current Labour Government is continuing that legacy by taking decisive action to improve safety, opportunity and equality for women.
Key measures include the Government’s ambition to halve violence against women and girls, close the gender pay gap, strengthen workplace rights through the Employment Rights Act 2025, reform childcare and improve women’s health through a renewed Women’s Health Strategy.
Amanda Martin MP said: “International Women’s Day is a chance to celebrate the progress women have made, but also to recognise that there is still more to do to achieve true equality.
Labour has always led the way when it comes to women’s rights, and this Government is continuing that proud tradition — from strengthening rights at work and reforming childcare, to tackling violence against women and improving women’s health.
I am proud to support the work being done to ensure women and girls across Portsmouth and the UK have the safety, opportunity and support they deserve.”
The Government’s strategy to halve violence against women and girls will deploy the full power of the state to prevent abuse, pursue perpetrators and support victims. This includes funding for domestic abuse support services, specialist police teams and stronger protections for survivors.
Labour is also taking action to support women in work by closing the gender pay gap through new action plans and strengthening employment rights, including day-one parental leave and stronger protections for pregnant women and new mothers.
Amanda Martin MP added: “For too long, too many women have faced barriers to opportunity, safety and equality. This Government is determined to change that — building a fairer society where every woman and girl can thrive.”
